FAMILY CYCLING Gear Up In order to navigate the streets safely, you'll need to properly equip your kids and their bikes Protect their heads with a PROPERLY FITTING HELMET Any helmet you find in store or online, at least at major retailers, will meet federal safety standards. The key is to make sure it fits properly, says Stephanie Hahn, executive director of Share the Road Cycling Coalition, an advocacy group based in Ontario. STEP 1 First try the shake test. Put the helmet on your child, tighten it by adjusting the rear dial, fasten the strap, then have them bend over and shake their head. The helmet should stay in place. STEP 2 After that, it's time for the 2v1 test. You should be able to place two fingers between your child's eyebrows and the helmet, with the straps forming a V shape under their ears. Make sure the chin strap is snug; you should be able to fit only one finger between their chin and the strap. Ensure the BIKE IS THE RIGHT SIZE Don't fret too much about what style or brand of bike to buy. Just choose one that your child will be interested in riding. It is important, though, to get the size right. Have your young one stand flat-footed over the bike, with the frame between their legs. They should have five to seven centimetres of clearance over the topmost tube. Next, have your child sit on the seat and place one pedal at the lowest point possible. With their heel on the pedal, your child should be able to fully extend their leg. Add a BELL More than a fun accessory, a bell alerts other drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to your child's presence, making it a crucial piece of safety gear. Look for a bell that kids can ring easily— some may be too big or require too much force for a child to ring. Place it somewhere your child can easily reach without taking their hands off the handlebars. SUMMER 2021 | 39
